Health Equity, Social Justice and Human Rights

By Ann Taket, with chapters contributed by Michaela Adamowitsch, Melika Chiswell, Brad Crammond, Arjun Singh and Carmel Treacy

Published 23rd April 2012 by Routledge
Important links between health and human rights are increasingly being recognised and human rights can be viewed as one of the social determinants of health. Furthermore, a human rights framework provides an excellent foundation for advocacy on health inequalities, a value-based alternative to views of health as a commodity, and the opportunity to move away from public health action being based on charity. This book demystifies systems set up for the protection and promotion of human rights globally, regionally and nationally. It explores the use and usefulness of rights-based approaches as an important part of the tool-box available to health and welfare professionals and community members working in a variety of settings to improve health and reduce health inequities. Global in its scope, Health Equity, Social Justice and Human Rights presents examples from all regions of the world to illustrate the successful use of human rights approaches in fields such as HIV/AIDS, improving accessibility to essential drugs, reproductive health, women’s health, and improving the health of marginalised and disadvantaged groups.

In what ways do you think human rights are involved in your daily life (as practitioner or researcher or citizen)?

What connections do you see between human rights and  health promotion?

This book will be presented at the IUHPE World Conference 2013 under the session Meet the Authors.

Practising Social Inclusion

Edited by Ann Taket, Beth R. Crisp, Melissa Graham, Lisa Hanna, Sophie Goldingay, Linda Wilson

To be published 26th June 2013
Practising Social Inclusion presents what we know about what works, and why, in promoting social inclusion and practising in a socially inclusive way. Contributing to the growing debates on social inclusion, this book moves beyond discussion of who it is that is socially excluded and the processes of exclusion. It draws on research and reflective practice to answer the vital question of how to actually work towards inclusion and includes five sections looking at different arenas for practice: policy; programme design; service delivery; community life; and research. Relevant to all those working to promote, or researching, human health and wellbeing, this book is especially suitable for practitioners, students and scholars in health promotion, social work, social policy, public health, disability studies, occupational therapy and nursing.

What opportunities are there in your daily life (as practitioner or researcher or citizen) for promoting social inclusion?  Which do you take and why?

In what ways do you think social inclusion is important to health promotion?

This book will be presented at the IUHPE World Conference 2013 under the session Meet the Authors.

The Hitchhiker’s guide to salutogenesis: Salutogenic pathways to health promotion

Three books, three languages, one topic:

The Hitchhiker's guide to salutogenesis: Salutogenic pathways to health promotion

La salutogénèse: Petit guide pour promouvoir la santé

Guía del autoestopista salutogénico: Camino salutogénico hacia la promoción de la salud

Authors: Roy, M., Lindström, B., Juvinyà, D., & Eriksson, M.

These three books are useful to health promotion for different reasons. First, they directly address one of the main critics intended to health promotion that is, its lack of theory. The salutogenic perspective of Aaron Antonovsky presented and explained in these books represents a particularly well-suited theoretical framework to operationalize the Ottawa Charter for health promotion. Second, these books are written in simple terms in order to be accessible for every researchers, practitioners, stakeholders, and overall population as well, in the three official languages of the IUHPE. They moreover talk about health promotion in terms of promoting health rather than in terms of preventing diseases. This discussion is based on actual evidence supporting this perspective in health promotion. What creates health? What are the resources that people can use to reach a better health and increase their quality of life? This was the main purpose of these books rather than focusing on what protects against diseases.

Questions to debate online on VHPO.net prior to the Meet the Authors session:

1-To what extent can the salutogenic theory address the criticisms made to health promotion?
2-How does the salutogenic theory differ from other positive health approaches?
3-What are the main criticisms that we could address concerning the salutogenic theory?

This book(s) will be presented at the IUHPE World Conference 2013 under the session Meet the Authors with the title "Salutogenesis all around the world: A joint session with French, English, and Spanish version of a health promotion guide".
